Frequently Asked Questions
Matis structures and offers investment opportunities in contemporary art. The company identifies major trends in the art market in order to invest in works by the most important artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Through the issuance of bonds convertible into shares, matis allows private investors to co-invest in acquisition opportunities usually reserved for art market professionals. The company holds a license granted by the Autorité des Marchés Financiers, allowing it to offer its investment products throughout Europe. Matis also works with art galleries specializing in the targeted artists, to whom it entrusts acquired artworks for resale, within a non-guaranteed target horizon of 2 years.
Matis offers investment in works by major artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, recognized by the world's leading museums, promoted by top galleries, and backed by a wide base of collectors worldwide. These are so-called "blue-chip" artists, whose works often exceed several hundred thousand euros in value, making them difficult for most investors to access. Targeted artists include, for example, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, Yves Klein, and François-Xavier Lalanne. These artists have profoundly shaped art history; their available works on the market are dwindling while their value increases, creating a scarcity effect.
Matis' investment offers are a form of collective financing that allow several investors to pool their funds to finance a large-scale project.
For each artwork, a project company is created, which you can invest in through the acquisition of convertible bonds, starting at €20,000. Once financed, matis entrusts the artwork to galleries specializing in the relevant artist, capable of placing it in front of the right collector, at its market value.
Matis works with the largest art galleries in Europe, the United States, Asia, and the Middle East. Artworks are resold within a target horizon (not guaranteed) of 24 months, which may extend up to 5 years. Depending on the resale value achieved, investors may recover their capital as well as a share of any capital gain realized on resale (not guaranteed).
Investing in blue-chip art carries risks of capital loss and illiquidity, in the event of an inability to sell the artwork at a satisfactory market value.
Investing in our investment offers requires our investors to accept these risks.
We target an investment horizon of between 6 and 36 months for our various artworks. Indeed, 80% of works in our market are resold within a two-year horizon after being commissioned with a gallery, and we anticipate reselling our artworks within this timeframe. However, the resale of our artworks depends on collector interest, and we are not able to commit to a specific resale horizon. Should a resale fail to occur within 5 years, your securities may be converted at a 1-to-1 ratio, upon a simple majority decision of bondholders. This mechanism allows for the artwork to be reclaimed and its sale to be forced via auction, though this does not constitute a guarantee of liquidity.
The artistic movements targeted by matis are as follows:
- Modern art, created by artists in the first half of the 20th century;
- Contemporary art, created by artists after 1945.
These two artistic movements together account for nearly 80% of transactions in the global art market. In its acquisition strategy, Matis therefore favors works created by iconic 20th-century artists, given the predominance of these two movements, which are a guarantee of liquidity and dynamism in the art market.
Matis identifies major current and future trends in the art market and focuses its analysis on the 100 most fundamental artists of the 20th century. Matis then sources its artworks from art market professionals, such as galleries, dealers, and auction houses. Through this privileged network, our team identifies works it considers undervalued and acquires them. Artworks are selected for their ability to be resold quickly through major international galleries specializing in the relevant artist, within a target horizon of two years, and are only purchased after approval by an acquisition committee.
Investing in our investment offers is open to individuals and legal entities, whether or not they are French tax residents. Matis reserves the right, however, to refuse certain subscribers if elements of customer due diligence or the traceability of transmitted funds are not deemed sufficient by our teams, in light of our regulatory obligations.
